Description of Job

This position will work with DWR's Division 6 Office and Lead Water Commissioner for the White River basin to administer water, collect water use data, perform field inspections and write field inspection reports in the lower White River basin near Rangely, Colorado.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Regulating the diversion and distribution of water in Districts 43.

  • Observes, computes and records the amount of water diverted, stored and released through each structure.

  • Performs field inspections to verify applications for water rights, abandonment of water rights, well permits, non-jurisdictional water impoundment structures, and stock water tanks.

  • Completion of reports on the field inspections

  • Reading and interpretation of Water Right Decrees

  • Assisting water users and providing them data as requested

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License

  • Must have a four-wheel-drive vehicle

  • Must be willing and able to work in very remote areas

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Must be able to work independently

  • Must be proficient in spreadsheets and Word or Google Docs

  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Must be willing to work and live within the White River basin


  • Experience with water rights is preferred.

  • Experience using a GPS unit is preferred.

  • Experience using various mapping systems such as Google Earth is preferred.
