Transportation Technology Center Senior Engineer II in Pueblo, Colorado
Title: Senior Engineer IIPrimary Duties Responsible for conducting testing and analysis for the Federal RailroadAdministration (FRA), the Association of American Railroads (AAR)and its member railroads, and commercial clients primarily in the areas ofstructural strength, stress analysis, fatigue life, and crash worthiness. Project management of consulting and test programs primarily involvingevaluation of structural durability and crashworthiness of railroad cars andcomponents. Project management responsibilities include writing proposals,interfacing with customers, and providing direction to a team of engineersand technicians performing test. Project managers are expected to manageprojects within budget and on schedule. Structural/stress analysis using classical methods, as well asfinite element analysis, for evaluating railroad car structures, truckcastings, coupler/knuckle castings, axles and wheels. Must haveexperience with ANSYS /LS-DYNA. The analysis will be used to determineultimate strength, fatigue strength and crash worthiness. Management of test programs. Responsibilities include writing testplans, managing tests, processing and analyzing data, and writing finalreports Preparation of reports and presentations, and presenting results tocustomers. Providing advice and support to AAR committees on stress- andfatigue-related issues. Some travel (5-10%) is expected, as required by projects. Mayinclude domestic and international travel.Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering with aminimum of 10 years of experience applying engineering principles, or anequivalent combination of experience and education. Must have experience related to fatigue testing and analysis(preferably railway vehicle related) including the application of FiniteElement Analysis to mechanical dynamic systems. Must be proficient in use of computers and have experience in the use ofANSYS and LS-DYNA software (or equivalent) for static linear, staticnonlinear and dynamic structural analysis. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are amust, along with demonstrable analytical skills. Candidate must be able to work under the following working and physicalconditions:- Environment: Office environment with possible field/railroadenvironment, on occasion. Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, and walkin an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfacessuch as- Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction;vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.- Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correctionPreferred Qualifications: Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Mechanical or Civil Engineeringand more than 10 years of experience applying engineering principles relatedto railway vehicle fatigue analysis including accelerated service lifetesting, testing and analysis, structural analysis, and strength of materials. Proficient in designing and conducting experiments. Experienceconducting impact and crashworthiness analyses and tests. Familiar with use ofnCode Glyphworks software for fatigue analysis of structures and processing oflarge quantities of in-service stress, force, and acceleration data. Familiarity in the use of LS-DYNA software including the LS-DYNAexplicit solver. Experience using recognized multi-body dynamics and/or vehicle-trackinteraction simulation software packages, and modeling of dynamic systems.
