Summary:

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Material Science Center, Thin Film Material Science and Processing group, is seeking a full time technician to perform materials deposition in support of photovoltaics research.

Job description:

The technician will work closely with scientists, engineers, and students to understand and help implement their ideas, experimental designs, and detailed plans. The candidate will perform routine metallization for thin-film photovoltaic devices, along with deposition of other thin-film materials on an as-needed basis. An ideal candidate will have familiarity in process optimization for multiple deposition methods such as thermal evaporation, sputtering, and e-beam evaporation. They will apply good written and oral communication skills, and accurately maintain detailed written records. Participation in project meetings may be required; including presenting progress reports, issues, and plans. The ability to work with minimal supervision, while maintaining consistent high quality standards and adhering to critical safety procedures, is required.

Job duties:

The technician will perform a variety of duties related to the fabrication and characterization of thin-film semiconductor devices.

These include:

  • Thin-film deposition of semiconductors, metals, organic small molecules, oxides and dielectrics by PVD and PECVD.

  • Operation of vacuum equipment.

  • Scheduling and coordination of maintenance and cleaning of deposition chambers and glove boxes.

  • Simple equipment maintenance.

  • Maintaining laboratory supplies.

  • Perform various semiconductor and device characterization techniques, including electrical measurements.

  • Perform work reproducibly with high degree of quality and reliability.

  • Input data into computer databases.

Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job.

Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices. G

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to communicate and work well with others.

  • Capable of working efficiently with minimal supervision in collaboration with scientists and engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent relevant experience. Relevant technical experience with semiconductor device fabrication and characterization is a plus.

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in semiconductor device fabrication and processing.

  • Experience performing photolithography and related processing tasks in a semiconductor cleanroom, including handling of hazardous chemicals.

  • Expertise in safe use of laboratory and cleanroom equipment including vacuum systems, chemical benches/fume hoods, gloveboxes, measurement and characterization equipment. Knowledge of equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to apply understanding of processes and procedures to formulate and implement improvements in workflow.
