Annual Salary Range: $39,600 - $63,500

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences is looking for a Summer Internship candidate that will integrate the operation of electric vehicles with distributed energy resources and/or other advanced technologies with the utility grid.

This position will integrate and optimize the operation of energy storage systems and electric vehicles in coordination with local buildings, microgrids, and grid operations . The successful candidate will design and develop innovative vehicle-grid integration solutions with guidance from senior researchers to investigate technology ultra-high power (>350 kW to >1 MW) DC charging systems for light-duty to Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, operation of DC microgrids, integration of distributed energy resources, behind the meter storage and integrated building management systems. This team is developing control theory approaches to optimize and develop analysis solutions to many of the control and communication challenges facing today’s grid integrated electric vehicle applications.


Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of electric vehicle components including high voltage battery systems, inverters, and chargers,

  • Background in optimization and control, extensive control algorithm development, with knowledge of control algorithms for buildings, managed EVs and/or microgrids

  • Demonstrated broad understanding and wide application of principles, theories, and concepts in operations, controls, and optimization of power systems areas and evaluation of centralized and distributed control algorithms with applications to real time hardware in the loop simulation systems.

  • Knowledge of electrical system simulation programs (e.g. Matlab/Simulink).

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of utility related standards including IEEE 1547 and IEEE2030, and IEC 61850.

  • Experience with digital real-time simulators (i.e. Opal-RT, RTDS, Typhoon, etc.)

  • Research laboratory working knowledge and experience with vehicles and/or testing. Experience with hardware testing and/or prototype system development.
