Job Summary

The Biomass Analysis Group provides analytical chemistry support to all research and development groups within the Biosciences Center. The successful candidate will work as part of a team performing chemical analyses on a wide variety of biomass-derived samples, keep accurate and detailed laboratory records, maintain and operate analytical instruments, and report results back to researchers.

Specific duties will include the extensive preparation of samples for instrumental analysis, analysis using a variety of chromatographic techniques including GC, GC-MS, LC, LC-MS, and IC. The position will also require the development and validation of new analytical methods in collaboration with researchers and colleagues. Duties also include adherence to NREL’s high technical, environmental, and health and safety standards.

The successful candidate will show a strong aptitude for instrumental analysis applied to biomass materials, including an understanding of fundamental concepts in biomass and analytical chemistry, and demonstrate significant attention to detail. They will also demonstrate clear record keeping skills with special attention to data traceability and superior oral and written communication skills.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Full knowledge of specialized focused support functions. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the supported activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Proficient in research techniques and practices. Solid communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience working as an analytical chemist supporting multi-disciplinary research teams and operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting laboratory analytical equipment such as LC, GC, and IC instruments.
