Annual Salary Range: $51,500 - $84,800

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Bioenergy Science and Technology (BEST) directorate within NREL performs a full range of research from exploring biomass at the molecular level through biorefinery process optimization to bring biofuels and bio-products to market.

What to expect:

  • Work as part of a team performing chemical analyses on a wide variety of biomass-derived samples.

  • Keep accurate and detailed laboratory records.

  • Extensive preparation of samples for instrumental analysis.

  • Maintain and operate analytical instruments.

  • Analysis using a variety of chromatographic techniques including GC, GC-MS, LC, IC, and LC-MS.

  • Development and validation of new analytical methods in collaboration with researchers and colleagues.

  • Report and present results back to researchers.

  • Champion NREL’s high technical, environmental, health and safety standards.

Successful candidates will show a strong aptitude for and demonstrated experience in instrumental analysis applied to biomass materials, including an understanding of fundamental concepts in biomass and analytical chemistry.

Basic Qualifications

Research Technician II - High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Research Technician III - High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

Research Technician II -

  • General chemistry knowledge and demonstrated laboratory experience outside of coursework.

  • Demonstrated experience taking detailed lab notes, collecting accurate data and analyzing results.

  • Understanding of fundamental concepts in biomass and analytical chemistry.

  • Demonstrated research techniques and practices in biomass and analytical chemistry.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and clear record keeping skills with special attention to data traceability.

  • Good communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

  • Ability to follow the direction of senior staff in performing detailed chemical procedures.

  • Be adaptable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and embody a strong safety culture.

  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills.

Research Technician III -

  • Extensive general chemistry knowledge and demonstrated laboratory experience outside of coursework.

  • Demonstrated experience taking detailed lab notes, collecting accurate data and analyzing results.

  • In-depth understanding of fundamental concepts in biomass and analytical chemistry.

  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices in biomass and analytical chemistry.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and clear record keeping skills with special attention to data traceability.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

  • Ability to follow the direction of senior staff in performing detailed chemical procedures and contribute to said procedures.

  • Be adaptable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and embody a strong safety culture.

  • strong multi-tasking and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or closely related field with hands on laboratory experience.

  • Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience working as an analytical chemist supporting multi-disciplinary research teams and operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting laboratory analytical equipment such as LCs, GCs, and ICs.

  • Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience working in a group setting, and have superior communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic role with greatly varying daily expectations in a Team atmosphere.

  • Proven ability to learn new skills in parallel with continually supporting ongoing work.
