Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

A Restoration Technician position is available with CSU-CEMML and will be located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), Washington. Incumbent will provide technical expertise and field support to natural resource project planning and implementation, data collection, wildlife surveys, habitat improvement, and invasive species management. Work will include fire-line preparation, oak and pine plantings, and other work that promotes the recovery/restoration of disturbed areas.

JBLM is located 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. JBLM is a training and mobilization center for all services and is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains. The facility is under the U.S. Army Joint Base Garrison, and includes the U.S. Army’s Fort Lewis and the U.S. Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base. JBLM is 90,000 acres with one of the largest remaining intact forest areas in the Puget Sound basin.

Required Job Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental field (e.g., forestry, ecology, restoration, etc.).

  • Ability to safely load and haul equipment, and lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly and 40 pounds occasionally.

  • Experience operating field equipment (skid-steer, 4×4, chainsaw, etc.).

  • Ability to do simple equipment maintenance (cleaning, checking fluids, etc.).

  • Knowledge and familiarity with south Puget lowland species, habitats, and restoration management techniques.

  • Ability to walk long distances and work outdoors in adverse weather on rugged terrain.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience with GIS.

  • Experience working on military installations or in a hierarchical organization.

  • Experience conducting surveys and data collection.

  • Ability to execute protocols for animal and plant surveys, invasive species control, restoration projects, mapping projects, etc.

Support conservation and restoration efforts for the natural resources program at JBLM by: • Oak woodland restoration (shrub and brush removal, tree thinning and planting, prescribed fire prep; etc.) • Operate equipment such as skid-steer for trail and road maintenance • Conduct various wildlife and habitat surveys • Monitor post burn areas; assist in fire unit preparation • Plant and maintain riparian plantings • Survey and manage invasive and noxious weeds • Provide assistance in forestry projects
