CDM Smith is a multi-discipline engineering and architectural firm. Our firm is responsible for large-scale projects in water, environment, transportation, energy, and facilities markets to make a positive impact for our clients.

CDM Smith is looking for a Senior Technical Editor. This is an opportunity to help build a new group in a well-established consulting firm. In this position you would be responsible for editing and design services for client deliverables (communications materials, including executive summaries, design reports, planning reports, public outreach information, PowerPoint/presentations, etc.).

This is an intermittent position with hours per week to be determined. There is potential to expand to full time in January 2021.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit basic to highly complex technical documents involving specialized, scientific, and/or non-English language. Research to acquire any needed background information such as the client’s style preferences. Edit documents following established style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style, CDM Smith Writer and Editor Guidelines, and/or client style guides.

  • Query authors on any copyright concerns, such as permissions for image use. Verify facts and ask writers to help address inconsistencies.

  • Edit basic to highly complex scientific and technical documents, editing for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style. Give writers feedback to improve clarity and make complex topics easy to understand. Perform various levels of editing from light copy editing to substantive content editing, working with internal clients (project managers and technical specialists) to produce error-free documents. Build and maintain writer-editor relationships.

  • Edit final drafts of documents for spelling, typographical, and formatting errors.

  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior-level editors. Mentor junior-level editors to develop them for future editorial roles within the firm. Oversee or review work performed by junior-level editors on project work, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Technical Writing, Technical Communication, or Communications.

  • 6 years of related experience.

  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.

  • Technical services or consulting industry experience (i.e., medical, science, research fields)

  • Impeccable attention to detail

  • Client-service focused

  • Able to manage expectations and deadlines

  • Industry awareness

  • Independent worker

  • Leadership skills (share industry trends, current topics, identify firmwide trends or areas for improvement needed)

  • InDesign experience

  • Engineering industry experience

  • Public speaking skills; will need to present to groups and project teams occasionally
