As a VMware Systems Engineer (SE) you will play a substantial role in building and sustaining customer relationships while driving the adoption of VMware solutions and exceeding our revenue goals. As an SE you will work closely with sales and extended teams to build business relationships and align with customers’ outcomes. As an SE your role will be impactful, visible, and rewarding.

Location: This is a home office-based position and will require travel. (35-50%)

The Charter of the VMware Network & Security Business Unit Systems Engineering Organization is to be the dedicated Pre-Sales experts to grow sales and the adoption of VMware’s next generation network virtualization and security platform, VMware NSX, NSX Advanced Load Balancer and SDWAN by VeloCloud.

We work directly with NSBU Product Management & Engineering, the VMware Network and Security Field Sales teams, and directly with customers to increase the footprint of VMware NSX, Velocloud and AVI products in cloud computing environments.

As a VMware Network and Security Solutions Engineer, you will be accountable for driving the technical sales cycles to ensure customer success and revenue goals derived from VMware NSX product line. You will be focused on selling the value of VMware Network and Security into private, hybrid and public cloud environments.

  • Enthusiastically and professionally present VMware vision and technologies, strategy, and product roadmaps to executives, technical management, operations management and technical engineers

  • Maintain deep technical and business knowledge of cloud computing and networking applications, industry directions, and trends

  • Maintain working knowledge of competitive architectures

  • Assist sales in preparation of proposals, statement of work, and documents for prospects

  • Work collaboratively with sales associates, product management, technical marketing and engineering during the development, launch and continuing refinement of NSBU products (NSX, AVI, Velo Cloud)

  • Maintain, grow, and use technical pre-sales relationships with key partner field organizations and VMware System Engineers

  • Articulate the impact of Network Virtualization and Security to a customer’s physical network, operations and future network and networking security architectures

  • Work with customers to obtain technical validation of proposed solution, and build high-level drawings

  • Assist with financial and infrastructure data collection and creation of customer ROI/TCO reports

  • Identify new customer projects for VMware solutions, and participate in demand generating events and activities

  • Provide consistent field reporting, and data input via

  • Understand the customer's high-level business objectives, and match VMware, andother Partner solutions as necessary to achieve customer's business and technical requirements.

  • Build long-term business relationships and become a trusted adviser for customers across all lines of business.

  • Continuously develop and expand the knowledge of the customer business/mission and take the initiative in creating solutions that address customer business/mission needs using the VMware portfolio along with third-party solutions.

  • Present VMware value proposition, vision and technologies, strategy, and product roadmaps to partners and customer roles including executives, technical management, and technical engineers.


  • 8 or more years of experience in the field of information technology.

  • Pre-sales or customer facing experience with strong relationship building skills.

  • Experience in positioning/selling Professional Services as part of Solution Selling.

  • Experience in the Public Sector markets (IC,NSO).

  • Ability to comprehend and stay current in the latest VMware technologies.

  • Ability to effectively present to audiences and adjust to level of role and understanding.

  • Ability to uncover business challenges and objectives and develop a documented custom solution to tackle those challenges.

  • Ability to develop and effectively communicate business cases and justifications to partners as required to drive business forward.

  • A balanced infrastructure and software engineering background.

  • Knowledge of datacenter networking fabric topologies and common architectures deployed – both Layer 2 and Layer 3 based

  • Experience with IT consolidation and technology integration projects which include VMware technologies. These should specifically include VMware Networking and Security products such as NSX,vRNI, NSX SDWAN andAppDefenseas well as 3rd party API integration, preferably with VMware technology.

  • Ability to transfer customer requirements and articulate them to bring back to product management

  • Must be comfortable and have a desire for hands-on duties supporting customers during product demonstrations, training, and POCs

  • Ability to deliver basic NSX training & workshop sessions as part of the pre-sales process

  • Experienceand understanding of DC infrastructure products, SDN and virtualization technologies, as well as Application Delivery Controller (ADC) services.

  • Expertise with automation and orchestration tools, and the ability to help customers operationalize advanced deployments.

  • Network industry certifications such as CCIE are preferred. BGP and OSPF routing knowledge and experience are a requirement.


  • VMware certification VCP Network Virtualization,

  • VCP Data Center Virtualization or equivalent VMware hands-on experience.

  • Software development experience a plus.

  • BA/BS in a technical field of study (Computer Science)
