Honeywell Quantum Solutions is looking for a highly qualified and experienced optical engineer / scientist to apply a deep and broad knowledge base to unique industrial applications. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of custom lens design, optical design software, geometric and physical optics, and light collection and imaging systems, along with a drive to advance the state-of-the-art and an ability to thrive in cross-functional teams of scientists and engineers.

In this role, you will:

Leverage your expertise in custom lens and reflective optics design, geometric and physical optics, optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, Lumerical, or equivalent, and tolerancing and optimization techniques to design high performance light collection, detection, and beam delivery systems that meet agile performance needs while minimizing optical and opto-mechanical complexity.

Collaborate with an integrated and cross-functional team of optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers to develop high performance, end-to-end opto-mechanical and signal processing systems that meet demanding light collection, delivery, and signal integrity requirements.

Innovate, design, and test novel light collection and beam delivery solutions that can be integrated into ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic environments while meeting stringent placement, polarization, and stability requirements.

Collaborate with an integrated and cross-functional team to develop performance specifications that balance technical advancement, performance and schedule risk, and scalability to future systems

Generate development and procurement timelines that ensure alignment between the delivery of optical solutions and the needs of test beds and commercial systems. Devise and implement risk mitigation pathways and communicate progress and capabilities with other team members and management.

Collaborate with the optical science and engineering team to devise, test, and down-select next-generation solutions that advance the state-of-the-art for optical interactions with trapped ions while balancing technical risk and development timelines

Master’s Degree in Optical Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related fieldU.S. citizenship

PhD in optical science, optical engineering, or related fieldExperience with custom lens design specification, including diffractive, spherical and aspherical elementsExperience with custom reflective light collection systemsWorking knowledge of light detection componentsKnowledge of opto-electronic devices, including photo-detectors and lasersKnowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) or Finite Element AnalysisExcellent written and oral communication skillsStrong organizational and leadership skills
