University of Colorado PostDoctoral Associate in Boulder, Colorado

Volkamer Research Group

Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Position in modeling of biomass burning emissions and their atmospheric impact

A postdoctoral position is available in the Volkamer Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder in collaboration with the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory’s Global Systems Division (Dr. Ravan Ahmadov). The Volkamer group is using research aircraft to quantify biomass burning emissions of trace gases and aerosols from wildfires in the northwestern US during summer 2018 (BB-FLUX field campaign). The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

· Analysis of the aircraft measurements (in-situ and remote sensing) from the BB-FLUX field intensive

· Simulation of the BB emissions during the BB-FLUX project period utilizing satellite data

· Conducing simulations of plume rise, transport and chemical transformations of the BB emissions during BB-FLUX using the meteorology-chemistry model WRF-Chem

· Publication of the research results in peer-reviewed literature

A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, physics, chemistry, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Skills in the atmospheric modeling, computer programming (preferably Fortran and Python) and analysis of complex data are highly desirable. Independence, drive and collaboration will be encouraged in order to develop the candidate’s career.

Background information about the research group, techniques, and previous publications and projects is available at theVolkamer Group webpageand NOAA/ESRL/GSD'sModel Development Branch’s page. A detailed information about the WRF-Chem model can be found athttps://ruc.noaa.gov/wrf/wrf-chem/.

Boulder is a great place to live, and it also houses the greatest concentration of atmospheric scientists in the world, thanks to the combined strengths of CU and the NOAA and NCAR National Labs.

To apply, please submit an application viaCU Careers Link, with a cover letter describing your research interests, a CV, date of availability, 2-3 first-author journal papers in PDF, and a list of 4-5 references who are very familiar with your research work. The initial appointment is for one year (preferably starting in summer 2018, depending on candidate availability), with the expectation of annual renewal for additional years upon satisfactory performance. The University of Colorado is an equal opportunity employer.

Review of applications will start on 1-May-2018, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply by that date. If that is not possible, please email Dr. Volkamer to alert that your application is coming and the expected completion date (email:rainer.volkamer@colorado.edu).
