The Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome is searching for a Senior Professional Research Assistant to work in the Crnic Institute’s Mouse Models Facility. The position involves leading the maintenance and management of a mouse colony composed of several models of Down syndrome; design, execution, and analysis, of experiments in these mouse models. The qualified candidate will work to maintain the mouse colony and, and independently perform experiments using various mouse models of Down syndrome.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mouse handling, behavioral training/testing, euthanasia

  • Establish baseline differences in cognitive abilities using mouse models of Down syndrome

  • Analyze the impact of immune dysregulation on cognitive abilities in mouse models of Down syndrome

  • Analysis of neuroprotective and therapeutic effects of pharmaceuticals after immune stimulation

  • Functional and molecular assays

  • Develop and maintain research databases

  • Data analysis, presenting, and publishing findings

  • Communicate with PI to help manage efforts of a team of researchers

  • Train junior team members

  • Animal imaging

  • Experienced researchers are encouraged to apply for this PRA position

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry or related sciences

  • At lease two years experience with animals (preferably with mouse models) and various molecular biology techniques (PCR, pipette sterile technique, chemical storage and disposal, etc.)

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.


  • Ability to perform essential mouse experimental techniques (injections, oral gavage, whole body necropsy, etc.)

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member, with supervision of a principal investigator and current laboratory staff

  • Mouse colony management, handling, and testing of mice

  • Self-motivated; highly organized, with demonstrated project planning and management skills in an academic research setting

  • Knowledge about developmental and cognition assays in mice (open field, rotarod, context fear conditioning, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques for protein, RNA and DNA analysis

  • Strong quantitative analysis skills, including statistics; excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong word processing skills

  • Ability to develop new techniques and methods through literature searches

  • Proven self-initiative and ability to catalyze new projects or ideas

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, ability to manage multiple projects or requests.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Positive attitude and the ability to work with a variety of biomedical investigators and colleagues.

  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of the Linda Crnic Institute and the Mouse Models Facility
