Senior Professional Research Assistant

The Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health is seeking a Senior Professional Research Assistant to work 30 hours per week (.75 FTE) for the Strong Lakota Families and Native WYSE CHOICES studies. Strong Lakota Families is a randomized controlled trial funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse that tests the effectiveness of a culturally grounded family-based health intervention to prevent substance use and suicidal ideation among American Indian youth on a reservation in South Dakota. Native WYSE CHOICES, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, tests the effectiveness of a culturally adapted mobile health intervention to prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies among urban American Indian and Alaska Native young women. The person in this position will work with the study Principal Investigators and with the Strong Lakota Families Implementation Director to coordinate activities for both research projects; assist with collecting and analyzing data and disseminating findings; review and recommend improvements to existing research procedures; provide support in conducting research, maintain documentation for research protocols and processes; and assist with social media outreach and engagement. In addition, the person in this role will assistance with conducting trainings for field team members when required; and attend and present at local and national meetings, conferences, and workshops to disseminate research findings.

Examples of Work Performed include, but are not limited to:

Strong Lakota Families (20 hours per week):

  • Coordinate activities for the research projects using Trello or other management platforms.

  • Provide input on cognitive interview protocols to improve survey items and assist with developing and piloting survey items in REDCap and Qualtrics.

  • Compile and update written policies and procedures in study manual to ensure fidelity of implementation of study processes across Colorado and South Dakota research teams.

  • Assist with the evaluation of existing inventory and coordinate procurement of study supplies for project sessions.

  • Lead capacity building activities for team members to improve skills in coordinating research activities.

  • Lead and assist with manuscript development and conference presentations to disseminate study findings.

  • Conduct literature searches related to substance use and suicidal ideation among AI/AN populations.

Native WYSE CHOICES (10 hours per week):

  • Assist with study outreach and recruitment using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media platforms.

  • Compile and update written policies and procedures in study manual to ensure fidelity of implementation of study processes.

  • Assist with enrollment verification of research participants.

  • Assist with updating and monitoring tracking database.

  • Lead and assist with manuscript development and conference presentations to disseminate study findings.

  • Conduct literature searches related to substance use and sexual risk taking among AI/AN populations.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position has been established at $37,500 - $41,250 (for .75 FTE).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree

  • At least 2 years of experience working in public health

  • At least 1 year of experience working in research or public health practice related to health equity.

  • At least 6 months of experience working in community-based participatory research with AI/AN communities

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data

  • Experience producing manuscripts and research presentations to disseminate findings

  • Experience developing social media strategies to encourage AI/AN engagement in research

  • Experience with federally funded research projects, including reports, human subjects review, external review boards

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Intermediate to advanced skill level with the following:

  • Quantitative analysis using SPSS or R

  • Qualitative analysis using NVivo or Atlas.ti

  • Graphic design using Canva, InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop

  • Survey development using REDCap and Qualtrics

  • Basic knowledge of alcohol, tobacco, or other drug prevention, suicidal ideation, and suicide among AI/AN adolescents

  • Basic knowledge of sexual health and sexual risk among AI/AN adolescents and young adults
