Nature of Work
A full–time Clinical Research Nurse position with the ACTG Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU), now part of the new COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN), at the University Of Colorado Denver School Of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CoVPN has been formed and will now contribute to the development of large-scale COVID-19 vaccine efficacy trials. The mission of the ACTG has been to develop and conduct scientifically rigorous translational research and therapeutic clinical trials that investigate the viral and immune pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection and its complications. Additional efforts will now be given for clinical trials to evaluate novel therapeutic agents and to find an effective and safe vaccine against COVID-19.
Clinical Research Nurse
This position reports directly to the Colorado AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) Site Coordinator in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
Examples of Work Performed
Interpreting and implementing ACTG, CoVPN and industry research protocols including following study procedures, consenting and following patient caseload, maintaining source documentation and completion of case report forms
Screening potential study participants, explaining study in detail and reviews inclusion/exclusion criteria with the participant, determining study participant eligibility.
Independently providing direct assessments of HIV positive patients enrolled in ongoing clinical trials. Evaluating for adverse drug reactions as well as medical events.
Order appropriate laboratory tests according to specific protocols and assuming responsibility to assure that clinical samples are collected properly. Obtaining blood specimens as needed. Assisting in obtaining compartmental samples as needed (such as genital secretions and spinal fluid).
Interacting with the CTRC research staff to schedule patients to be seen on that unit for study visits. Responsible for training CTRC research staff on the proper conduct of the study.
Work together with multidisciplinary team in coordinating patient care. Sharing study information with appropriate medical personnel. Communicating via email with protocol teams throughout the ACTG.
Completing all case report forms in a timely fashion. Reviewing all laboratory data and notify appropriate medical personnel as needed. Monitoring patients for adverse events and complete AER's as needed. Communicating with protocol teams as necessary via email. Developing flow sheets which serve as source documentation for protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
This position requires enthusiasm for medical research with knowledge or interest in HIV and COVID-19. One must be self-directed, independent with good organizational skills, and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
All duties and responsibilities listed above are designated as essential function. Incumbent must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time; must be able to lift at least 15 pounds; must be able to look and read small computer screen for long periods of time.
This position works Monday-Friday based on the research subject schedule. The position will be located at the Colorado AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) on the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical campus in Aurora, CO.

Requires an RN/BSN degree
Active or eligible for nursing licensure in the State of Colorado
1 year prior experience in clinical nursing
2-year work experience in a clinical research setting
Familiarity with FDA, OHRP, GCP, International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals (ICH), and HIPAA regulations
