Professional Research Assistant (PRA)

Division of Infectious Disease

Nature of Work

A full-time or half-time Clinical Research Coordinator position in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University Of Colorado Denver School Of Medicine. For an ongoing research study that investigates the role of host RNA expression signatures in acute and chronic infectious diseases, the position will involve obtaining patient informed consent, followed by blood and saliva collection. The candidate will aid in maintaining compliance with local regulatory agencies through the use of clinical trial management software (OnCore). Sample acquisition will then be followed by RNA isolation and potentially other biomolecule purification from those samples, and in some cases shipping of materials to collaborating work groups. The position will be located at the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical campus in Aurora, CO.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Networks with research group members and individual health care providers in the Infectious Disease Division to identify potential study participants.

  • Recruits and enrolls prospective participants and conducts data collection. Familiarizes potential participants with the details of the study. Reviews protocol inclusion/exclusion criteria, and confirms study eligibility.

  • Conducts the informed consent process and insures that it is properly documented.

  • Assures adherence to all research standards as set forth by the study investigators, Investigational Review Board and Institutional Biosafety Committee.

  • Works under supervision of experienced research scientists to isolate and purify RNA and other biomolecules from the obtained patient samples.

  • Organizes, maintains and prepares research materials for patient care visits.

  • Assures protocol compliance and completes necessary records in OnCore and Epic. Accurately transfers source documentation into Case Report Form. Maintains participant research files.

  • Works with clinical research team to coordinate scheduling of participants and monitoring visits.

  • Although this is a minimal risk study involving only blood and saliva collection, the individual will be prepared to recognize adverse events and promptly notify appropriate parties.

  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities listed above are designated as essential functions. Incumbent must be able to sit or stand for several hours at a time; must be able to lift at least 15 pounds; must be able to read small computer screen for long periods of time, must be able to interact verbally with patients and scientists.

Working Conditions

This position works Monday-Friday. For a half-time role, flexible hours can be arranged.

Salary and Benefits

The hiring salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some experience in molecular biology laboratory work, such as pipetting small volumes accurately, use of centrifuges, use of kits for biomolecule extraction from samples, properly freezing and shipping materials, keeping laboratory notebook records. Some background in cell culture will also be valued, but is not necessary.

  • Prior experience with patient interaction and clinical trial enrollment.

  • Ability to perform venipuncture blood draws.

  • Experience with Epic, OnCore or other clinical trial management software and electronic medical record systems.

  • Readiness and ability to be trained in required laboratory skills.
