Nature of Work:

A Professional Research Assistant (PRA) is needed to assist in ongoing studies in the area of skin regeneration using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) based approaches and related projects.

We are looking for a highly motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic individual. The position will be working closely with the Postdoc on publication-generating projects. The work will involve a range of mammalian cell and tissue cultures, standard molecular biology techniques and mouse colony handling.

The laboratory environment is team-oriented, where creativity, enthusiasm and dedication are rewarded.

Supervision Received

Dr. Ganna Bilousova, Associate Professor of Dermatology, will directly supervise the PRA.

Primary Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will perform molecular and cellular biology experiments, such as molecular cloning, PCR/qPCR, immunohistochemical staining, and CRISPR-mediated gene editing. Cell culture work will include maintenance of induced pluripotent stem cells, directed differentiation of iPSCs to various cell types, and the generation of human skin equivalents in vitro (organotypic cultures). In addition, the successful candidate will be working with mice. The mouse handling will comprise the maintenance of a mouse colony, breeding, weaning and PCR-genotyping. PRA will also participate in mouse surgery procedures, such as skin grafting surgeries and xeno-transplantations. Laboratory duties will involve receiving laboratory reagents and making stock solutions. The candidate must have good organizational skills, excellent English communication skills, strong work ethic, excellent record keeping abilities, and willingness to learn. Development of new techniques and independence will be expected and encouraged. This is a full-time position and will require occasional work on the weekends.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences (preferably Biology, Chemistry, or related field

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or higher

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a molecular biology lab

  • Immunostaining (either immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence)

  • Immunofluorescence imaging

  • Experience with molecular cloning, cell culture, and sterile technique

  • Experience with TALEN or CRISPR mediated gene editing

  • Previous experience with stem cell cultures, especially human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells

  • Experience with animal models

Competencies / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to write, communicate, and present scientific topics effectively

  • Strong organizational skills and excellent record keeping abilities

  • Detail oriented and motivated to troubleshoot technical and scientific problems

  • Strong preference will be given to those planning to work with us for ≥2 yrs
